Sam

Even with the warm day outside, the cup of steaming tea set beside his hand was comforting. Sam looked up at his aunt and offered a hint of a smile.

“Thank you,” he said.

Rose looked different. Older. Paler. Like she was fading and might soon become transparent. It wasn’t unexpected. He was honestly surprised to find her still standing and functioning when he arrived in Michigan. She’d been carrying on with strength and determination that astonished him since the day she called him to tell him her only child was missing. But she couldn’t withstand it all unscathed. It was chipping away at her and each day was getting harder.

She wasn’t just carrying the burden of her child disappearing and then being found dead. That was painful enough. It destroyed her world and sent her reeling. But she’d taken on even more than that. It hurt her deeply when the police told her Marie was a drug user and living a double life away from the family who loved her. She couldn’t imagine that was something Marie would do.

It wasn’t that Marie was an angel. She’d had phases in her life when she’d made bad decisions and did things she later regretted. Like most teenagers, she rebelled against the rules put in front of her. She went through rough patches with her mother. She drank, had questionable relationships, told her fair share of lies, and put herself in situations more dangerous than Rose ever wanted to think about.

But she’d gotten through them. And she’d gotten through the hard times she hit when she got older. She’d rebuilt her life and was making something of herself. It didn’t make sense that she would give all that up for a high. A relapse wasn’t impossible. She was human. She could have made that mistake. But she wouldn’t hide it from Rose. She wouldn’t let herself deteriorate in the shadows and not reach out to claw herself back to safety.

Her mother was there for her. Sam was there for her. Marie had known that about both of them. She’d known she wasn’t alone and never had to be ashamed of what she’d been going through. They would be there for her. They would do anything she needed. She didn’t have to hide.

And Rose knew she didn’t. It wasn’t just protecting herself from the thought. It was a mother’s heart knowing her child. And she’d picked up the cause to battle for Marie. She was going to do anything she could to make sure people knew the truth about her daughter. She wanted Marie’s story to be told and she would give everything in herself to see it done.

She’d done just that. There wasn’t much left of her. When Sam looked at her, he felt like she was disappearing right in front of him. Working to prove Marie didn’t go out to that warehouse and inject herself with enough drugs to kill herself was no longer just about knowing the truth and holding whomever was involved accountable.
